So, needless to say the annual Society of Integrative and Comparative Biology meeting in Portland, OR was great! My poster is below if you'd like to take a look.

Here's a highlight:
Just look at the bimodal effect of EDCs in action on our male anal fin! See my post from last year to see some histology photos.
This year, we were able to prepare and examine more females for signs of gonadal masculinization. All slides were examined without knowing treatment group. Here's the % masculinized:
Control Females: 0/4, 0% masculinized
Low dose trenbolone: 2/3, 66% masculinized
High dose trenbolone: 5/7, 71% masculinized

Conferring, Conferencing, and mostly listening
Last year, going to SICB was my very FIRST conference (first of many, I'm sure!!), so this year I was one of the few returners. It was great being the semi-experienced one. For many of the students from RU, this was their first conference as well, and I was able to help them out a little.
I was a lot more confident this year in speaking to faculty and other researchers. I met several faculty that I went on to apply to their lab.
One thing that I really enjoyed seeing different from last year was the change in trends of research. It seemed that many in the field of endocrinology are exploring genetics right now. It was really exciting to see some more evidence that EDCs are causing effects, whether or not we can see them.
I had some good science conversations and saw some great talks. I'm really enjoying expanding my knowledge and network of research(ers).

Hitting the West Coast
This trip to Portland was my first time on the west coast at all, and it was great! We hit all the spots. We went to Powell's bookstore, Voodoo donut, and the Oregon Zoo.
I did, however, get sick while in OR. I so rarely get sick that I must blame the west coast. It was definitely a damper but I just couldn't let it stop me from getting the full experience.
By the way... FOOD TRUCKS?! I love eating, so SW 10th st was my heaven (and walking distance from the hotel). I could seriously go back and just eat all the time.
What I wish we'd had time for: Living Room Theaters, Multnomah Whiskey Library, more donuts, the markets
Oh well, I guess I have to go back... =)
